Honest Empathy Innovations Inc. aims to build sustainable mental healthcare solutions with groundbreaking development and innovation in machine learning. We plan to build a next-generation machine learning platform that Canadians can access for their mental health with this project. Our solution is supported by the Canadian Mental Health Association, NEXT Canada, and Yukon Government. Our solution research aims to help folks affected by post-traumatic stress disorder and those who encounter anxiety, depression, and OCD daily. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, By age 40, about 50% of the population will have a mental illness. Two out of three Canadians won’t have access to treatment. This project aims to significantly reduce this statistic by innovating CBT with machine learning.

Développement et optimisation de procédé électrochimique de séquestration du CO2 en phase aqueuse

En 2017, le Québec a émis plus de 78 Mt éq. CO2 et le secteur industriel était responsable d’environ 30 % de ces émissions. Dans le cadre de la lutte aux changements climatiques, le présent projet propose une approche de séquestration de CO2 qui soit complètement innovante, respectueuse de l’environnement, moins coûteuse, efficace et capable de générer des produits d’une haute valeur ajoutée. Il s’agit d’une séquestration électrochimique en phase aqueuse utilisant des électrodes catalytiques. En utilisant de telles électrodes, il sera possible de lixivier et libérer in-situ des ions calcium à partir d’un résidu industriel à valoriser (ex. : scories) et de réduire simultanément le CO2 injecté, tout en générant du carbonate de calcium (CaCO3) de haute pureté, et ce, dans des conditions de température et de pression normales.

Reimagining Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) for Housing in the Architectural Design Process

Combining design and digital workflows, pre-fabrication, and automated assembly provides a rare opportunity for the AEC industry to unite three critical construction items that have traditionally been at odds with one another: Time, Cost and Quality. Working with AIBC’s off-site automated prefabrication facility, this project will use research through design to provide insight into the ways in which Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) can leverage and synthesize innovative architectural design thinking and methods, with leading edge manufacturing processes and assembly techniques, to create housing assemblies that are more affordable, healthier, and integrated with current methods of digital design, production, and construction. The intended result is a re-imagined design process for the housing industry, capable of addressing the separation of design thinking and automated construction technologies.

Accelerating Solar/LED Community Lighting

This project with the nature of business research tends to talk about LED development and variable applications, specifically about solar/LED at the community public lighting, complying with the roadway lighting design code approved by the city of London, ON and relevant professional bodies. The content analysis of main LED suppliers and LED industry, together with evaluating the results of completed pilot LED cases will provide constructive suggestions on the creation of a solar/LED street lighting system for smart communities. The benefit of LED technology and the solar powered LED in street lighting will be fully discussed. One of the biggest benefits, the energy saving with end objective of Net ZERO energy street lighting will be investigated by taking into account the loss of power transmission and the consumption of other relevant electric devices in real application, compared to the existing technology of High Pressure Sodium (HPS) luminaires, which is commonly used in roadway lights. The contribution of my paper is to provide the partner organization a comprehensive view of regulations, market and project development and play a guiding role for its street lighting projects and achieve the pre-defined performance.

Obesity Research

The goal of this study is to look at the effects of healthy lifestyle on obesity status in men who are middle aged, slightly overweight and don’t exercise. This study will use exercise and nutrition guidelines to look at their effect on some of the hormones which maintain healthy body weight. Subjects enrolled in this research will engage in healthy eating and exercise training for 3 months as well as have various tests during the study to see how you change during this period of time. This study may try to find clues to improve treatments of obesity and other diseases specific to the at risk demographic of workers found in the offshore oil and gas workforce of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This project aims to solve the problem of visual inspection of the aircrafts. The images and/or video will be used in conjunction with an AI/ algorithm to efficiently identify aircraft defects. Dual Phase Change Material (PCM) Integration and Optimization for Heating and Cooling Seasons

One way to improve the efficiency of a building is to use thermal storage material. A recent thermal storage strategy is to use phase change material (PCM) which allows for the storage and release of thermal energy. One of the main advantages of using PCM over traditional thermal storage (like concrete) is that PCM can achieve the same level of thermal storage as concrete while using less material. Using PCM can also reduce and delay peak load, improve thermal comfort, and reduce the overall energy consumption of a building. This thermal storage can be used to reduce cooling loads in the summer or reduce heating loads in the winter. However, PCM is not a black box, and implementing it will require careful design consideration. Computer simulations will be used to develop methods and design strategies to optimize PCM use in order to minimize operation costs and/or minimize energy load.

Pour pallier aux besoins du marché, une amélioration de la rapidité et de l’efficacité des services d’évaluation immobilière est souhaitable. En bref, le projet vise à améliorer significativement le processus d’évaluation: d’un processus manuel à un processus automatisé qui s’appuie sur les données de manière objective. Optimiser ce processus à l’aide de la science des données requiert l’utilisation de techniques avancées d’intelligence artificielle dans les domaines de l’apprentissage profond, de l’apprentissage par renforcement, de modélisation de signaux à partir de séries temporelles et de vision par ordinateur.

Wildlife Risk Assessment and Response Capacity in the Pacific Northwest

Response to an oil spill involving wildlife can be challenging in the Pacific Northwest. The terrain, weather and remoteness of many locations are all elements to be considered when determining an effective response strategy. A goal of a wildlife response team is to be as prepared as possible when responding to an incident. The animals present at any particular time depend on factors such as migration, breeding, and food abundance. Using existing studies, environmental sensitivity maps and novel research, we will enable the best wildlife response at a given time of year at a given location. The aim is to develop a risk assessment model specific to wildlife and faunal movement on the coast of British Columbia. If it is known what animals and conditions to expect at the location of the spill, wildlife response equipment supplies and personnel can be selected more precisely.

Advanced numerical modeling of electric motors and power electronics components

Whether for climate change reasons or the recent geopolitical situation, the electrification of various sectors of the worldwide economy is taking place at an accelerating rate. The technologies needed for such evolution rely heavily on electric motors and power electronics devices that must offer higher performance while costing less and consuming less electricity. The development of these products is increasingly carried out through simulations that predict the product’s performance before it is built. Predicting such performance requires sophisticated software that can start with the 3-dimensional geometrical model of the product and simulate its electric, thermal and structural behavior in near real-world operating conditions. This project aims at providing such software by adding key capabilities to the partner’s existing commercial solutions.

Root microbiome and chemical profile on different medical marijuana (Cannabis sativa) chemovars: a tool to develop novel indoor bioinoculants.

Plant microbiology has important applications in the process of industrial Cannabis sativa manufacture and distribution through its direct impact on both plant health and product quality. The research in this field has enormous potential to contribute to the quality and safety of the products, through the modulation and stabilization of plant metabolites, increase of disease resistance and yield under stressful conditions. In partnership with Lyonleaf Cannabis Inc., this project aims to isolate and to characterize the microbiota of five indoor medical C. sativa strains, with known distinctive characteristics. This project will help to better understand the association of the plant microbiome and its metabolites, with the final purpose of developing a bioinoculant using the best beneficial bacteria associated with the roots of C. sativa. The new product to be developed has potential to improve production and stimulate different cannabis chemotypes, delivering a better and safer product to the final consumer – medical patients.
