Scaling Up AltumView’s Marketing Campaign

AltumView is a Vancouver start-up company and has been working wholeheartedly for the past few years to develop the Sentinare Smart Activity Sensor for senior care. The trend of senior living at their own houses and independently from their children is becoming more popular. Moreover, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, the seniors are high-risk individuals. The help they receive from caregivers and family members are reduced and this puts seniors in a difficult situation. The AltumView product aims to offer help for family members and caregivers to take care of seniors by featuring fall detection through using artificial intelligent technology, while protecting the privacy of the seniors. The product has a high potential of growth in the future because of its unique mission, especially since it will be integrated into Amazon’s Alexa Together system. However, the company has been focusing on the product development. The company now wants to introduce the products to the customer market and expand the product presence as well as brand awareness. In order to achieve this, an on-going marketing strategy is needed, and the company also needs to keep its social media accounts active. These will be the focus of this project.

Design and fabrication of cavitation tubes for efficient activation water in a flow

Plasma activated water (PAW) is water that carries active species generated by cold plasm. Chemical species generated from plasma treatment are complex matrix consisting of free radicals and ions. Reactive nitrogen and oxygen species (RNOS) produced by cold plasma discharge with air as the working gas contribute to highly desired functionalities of PAW for a broad range of applications. In agriculture, PAW treatment may lead to enhanced seed germination and higher growth rate of plants, and improve the tolerance of plants against abiotic stresses. However, the large-scale application of PAW has been energy intensive, due to lack of readily available technology for fast and high throughput PAW production. This project will design a new activation process for PAW in a flow to enable high throughput production of PAW for real applications.

At Hammond Power Solutions Inc. we are currently running Sharepoint 2013 on premise. Support for this version will expire shortly so we need to move the content to the cloud to ensure business continuity. The main product we use to develop our forms in Sharepoint 2013 is Infopath which is also no longer supported. The designated project for this internship will be to identify new cloud technologies to replace InfoPath. The intern will be responsible for developing some examples/test environments to see what option would be the best fit. The cloud platform will support the business for upcoming projects and content in the coming years. Another benefit is that cloud-based technologies are constantly updated without extensive work from Hammond employees, while our current on premise updates are much more challenging and time-consuming. Overall, the intern will be responsible for reviewing the business needs and specifications, and connecting with both internal and external human resources (ex. supervisor, IT team members, external vendors) to gain guidance on which software is best suited for the organization.

Child Strength: Supporting communities through executive functioning and early literacy strategies

It is evident that children require support for executive function and emergent literacy development to optimize their personal well-being, school, learning and life success. This project focuses on how to best support executive function [EF] and early emergent literacy [EL] acquisition for our children by providing a parent and early childcare community with strategies on how to engage and immerse young learners in developmentally appropriate activities. Executive functions, or the thinking skills, emerge in the first year of life and are supported and enhanced by language (including language spoken by parents, caregivers and others in the child’s environment including playmates). In order to ensure EF skills and EL are introduced and reinforced in our children, there must be a concerted effort to strengthen the knowledge and skills of parents and preschool teachers related to foundational EF and EL skills. This research study involves working with the early childcare educators and parents of the Coalhurst, AB Parent Link Centre’s Stay and Play [SnP] program over a one-year period. The researchers will create and assist in implementing developmentally appropriate EF and EL strategies to both the early childcare educators and parents.

Precision AI – Agronomy Data Labelling and Testing

Agronomy interns would be important members of our growing agronomy AI team. Precision AI now needs more agronomy expertise to achieve our growth objectives. The interns will help us accelerate our artificial intelligence model development by applying their expertise to more quickly identify crop and weed plants in the images we have collected. They will also be able to accelerate our AI performance testing. Two interns would focus on the agronomic aspects of field testing the technology. One intern would support our AI team with the work of annotating plant images for machine learning.
This work will support the creation and commercialization of Precision AI’s proproprietary technology and IP.It will contribute improving the speed and accuracy of the processes. This work will also contribute to the work that we are planning to launch in the United States.
In the short term, this work will help reduce the input costs of farmers. In the longer term, the project will contributed to the reduction of chemicals in the environment and food supply.

Design of abrasion resistant wood plastic composites

The vast majority of monomers used to make plastics are derived from fossil hydrocarbons. Furthermore, most of the commonly used plastics are not biodegradable. As a result, they accumulate in landfills or the natural environment. This has resulted in a societal concern over overcrowding of landfills, climate change, and rapid depletion of natural resources. The use of sustainable cellulosic biomass for wood plastic composites (WPCs) and recycling of plastics for WPC applications provide significant ecological benefits. The proposed project targets to develop a cost effective, light weight and sustainable wood plastic composites by incorporating hemp hurd residues in recycled polyolefins. This work will support NFT’s activities in extending its sustainability effort in the construction and manufacturing sectors. Furthermore, the project will form a valuable multidisciplinary training opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow and other highly qualified personnel.

Investigation of group effect of large pile groups under lateral loading

At present, the understating of the lateral behavior of large pile group foundations (> 100 piles) supporting bridges, high-rise buildings, marine structures, and LNG tanks is limited. There are no definitive published design recommendations or guidance on evaluation of the lateral group effect of large pile groups. The current design standards (e.g., AASHTO, Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual) are based on the previous experimental results of full-scale and model testing of much smaller pile groups (< 25 piles). Therefore, a great uncertainty lies in extrapolating the recommendations of the group effect for the small pile groups to the design of much larger pile groups. The appropriateness of such extrapolation remains a subject for investigation. This project aims to develop analytical and numerical solutions for this investigation. The outcomes of this research will enhance the partner company’s capability in designing large pile groups under lateral loading and safeguard the infrastructure in Canada.

Legacy Financial Canada Inc., the partner organization of this project, is a Toronto based financial planning and services firm incorporated in 2014. The company offers holistic comprehensive financial plans, services, and advice to reach the financial goals of their clients. Its uniquely customized solutions and services, taking a more distinct shape around the diverse needs of individuals, families, business owners, organizations, and charities and help them to build, protect and efficiently manage their wealth.
During the pandemic time, financial advisors face new challenges in managing workflow, and in communicating with colleagues and clients seamlessly[6]. Moreover, currently there is no system that takes input from client and advisor together and gives instant financial advice to the client. Legacy Financial will collaborate with WITMACH to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered application on top of their existing financial planning tool to meet these challenges.
Through such collaborative intelligence, the company will be able to find a unique value proposition and to provide enhanced client service that meet their needs and expectations in developing adequate financial/investment straggles in today’s complex economy.

L’art de l’interprétation dans l’oeuvre de Pierre Hadot: recherches archivistiques

Le séjour de recherche projeté s’inscrit dans un projet de doctorat au sujet de L’art de l’interprétation dans l’oeuvre de Pierre Hadot. Le philosophe français Pierre Hadot (1922-2010) est connu pour avoir entrepris une redéfinition de la philosophie en tant que “manière de vivre” – d’après le portrait que ses travaux d’historien lui ont permis de faire de la philosophie antique (c’est-à-dire de la philosophie des origines). Il s’est aussi posé tout au long de sa trajectoire intellectuelle des questions au sujet de l’interprétation des textes anciens, qui ont moins retenu jusqu’ici l’attention des chercheurs. La visée de mon projet de doctorat est d’étudier pour elle-même cette dernière dimension de l’oeuvre de Pierre Hadot, dans le but de mettre celle-ci en dialogue avec l’herméneutique contemporaine, qui a élevé l’art de l’interprétation au rang de philosophie (car on interprète non seulement des textes mais aussi soi-même, le monde, voire l’être même).
