Automated Domain Specific Essay Scoring

Automated essay scoring (AES) task involves using computer technology to grade written assessment and assigning a score based on its perceived quality. AES has been among the most significant Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications especially due to its educational and commercial value. Accordingly, AES is a well-studied topic with previous studies focusing on improving the performance via state-of-the-art deep learning and NLP methods to more accurately score the essays. The majority of these studies rely on publicly available corpora and limited datasets. However, domain-specific essay scoring tasks (e.g., law and accounting exams) would benefit from customized NLP methods for improved performance. In this research, we aim to develop domain-specific NLP methods for improved AES. Specifically, we will perform this analysis in 3 dimensions: domain-specific models, interpretable deep learning and weak supervision. At the end of the project, via our investigations in these three dimensions, a modern AES will be established

Optical characterization and signal quantification for onsite application in gold exploration

The mineral resource sector is one of the key industries in Canada and Canadian companies are major stakeholders in global mineral exploration and mining activities, including gold exploration. Prospecting takes time, resources, and substantial financial support. Currently, samples collected in the field are shipped to specialized laboratories for analysis. In addition to substantial costs, results are not received for several weeks. The intern will evaluate a novel instrument to analyze field samples by using changes in light signals. The portable instrument will deliver information at the mining site within 5 minutes and without the need for a highly trained person. This analysis will also provide information on how much gold is present in the sample as well as estimates of size and shape of the gold particles. Successful validation will allow the industry partners to expand into new applications in the mineral exploration sector.

Absorption of colostral immunoglobulins in neonatal dairy calves

Calves are born without antibodies needed to fight off disease. The only source of antibodies available for the first few weeks of a calf’s life comes from maternal colostrum, the first milk produced by the cow. Calves are able to absorb these antibodies for approximately 24 hours of life, and absorption rates vary widely. Currently, only 15-50% of antibodies consumed are actually absorbed, requiring much improvement. The proposed research project will investigate how, where, and when the antibodies are absorbed. Using intestinal tissue from newborn dairy calves, we will measure the rates of antibody transport every 6 hours of life until 24h, and perform histology to visualize the methods of transport. The partner organization is a developer of bovine colostrum products with a keen interest in improving our understanding of colostrum feeding and absorption. Ultimately, this research will advance our knowledge in the area of newborn calf health.

Evaluating the Current and Future Capacity for Natural Climate Solutions in Canada’s Oceans

Climate change is rapidly altering the planet, and solutions are urgently required to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and limit further warming. Blue carbon ecosystems (salt marshes, seagrass meadows, kelp forests, marine soft sediments) are important carbon reservoirs that could contribute to Canada’s climate change solutions. Yet, despite having the world’s longest coastline, Canada has yet to account for ocean carbon sinks in its GHG inventories. Interns in this project will: 1) quantify the marine soft-sediment carbon sinks that could be preserved by limiting Canada’s bottom-trawl footprint (PDF1); 2) quantify the current and future annual mitigation potential of kelp forest ecosystems on the British Columbia coast (PhD1) and nationwide (PDF2); 3) synthesize these results with our complementary ongoing work for eelgrass and salt marsh ecosystems to produce a nationwide assessment of the potential for Canada’s oceans to contribute to natural climate solutions (PDF2).

Development of a low-cost, user-friendly and rapid prototyping approach for the design and production of patient-specific ring splints

Ring splints are regularly used to address swan neck deformity, boutonniere deformity as well as rheumatoid thumb due to their capacity to improve pain, function, and satisfaction. However, these ring splints do have limitations such as their price, lack of customizable attributes, and aesthetic dissatisfaction. For these reasons, 3D printing has gained traction as a possible manufacturing solution. Although promising, the design of such orthopedic devices requires a certain level of technical expertise that clinicians do not usually have. Taking this into account, the main purpose of this project is to develop a rapid prototyping approach for the design and production of patient-specific ring splints that are user-friendly from the clinician’s point of view. For the outcome to be efficient and advantageous, the process will have to meet the criteria to be implemented at the Sherbrooke Hospital/Medical Center, “Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke” (CHUS), and the project’s own standards:
• Identify requirements for the printing of custom orthoses within the “Service de rhumatologie du Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke”.
• Develop and identify each step of the workflow, from image processing, to ring design, to printing preprocessing.
• Develop a time-efficient simplified process to make it more user-friendly and easier to use by health professionals the day the patient is seen.
• Identify commercially available 3D printers and materials that can satisfy the project’s demands.
• Reduce manufacturing costs to make the ring orthoses more affordable for patients.

Design and implementation of an automatic security response mechanism for cloud services based on trust attributes.

Cloud computing offers virtually unlimited resources in CPU, memory, and bandwidth, under a service agreement scheme. Operators leverage on this model to achieve economies of scale, by hosting as much customers as possible on such infrastructure. The detected gap is that the Communication Service Providers (CSP) must take into consideration trust as a parameter into the service offering to its customers. This way, customers obtain tools and design capabilities to choose a cloud service offer according to trust-related internal security policies. Therefore, the CSP must ensure that the chosen trust level is maintained through the whole time that the service contract is valid leveraging on a continuous monitoring of the infrastructure, collection of contextual information and automatic response mechanisms that are triggered as the trust level varies through time. This action flow assures security and trust on the set of entities that provide service.

Data Visualization of GIS Data for Managing Land Access

Access to private or leased land is currently not a simple problem. Landowners would like to know who is on their land, when, and for what purpose. Getting permissions from landowners to use their land is often not straight forward; often leading to bypassing obtaining permission. Some landowners do not want hunters, but do not mind artists or photographers accessing their land. To simplify this process, Western Heritage is building the SaskLander Platform that provides an easy-to-use interface for managing interactions between landowners and those seeking permission to access their land. Saskatchewan Polytechnic will be working with Western Heritage to provide a scalable visualization of GIS data that offers high level detail that can be drilled down to every piece of land across multiple provinces. Land-users will be able to locate land they wish to access and request permission from landowners to have access to the land. Landowners will be able to manage land use requests automatically or at an individual request level.
