Creating a baseline for Science Based Targets in the apparel industry

tentree aims to create Science-Based Targets to ensure its climate-positive ambitions. With the rise of corporate sustainability, creating sustainability goals backed by science can push organizations to realize these ambitions. The research will provide foundational work for creating an impact report and sustainability agenda. The aim is to demonstrate tentree’s leadership in the sustainable apparel industry and chart a roadmap towards sustainability targets and ambitions. Since the fashion industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions, with estimates placing the industry as responsible for ~10% of emissions, it is essential that action is taken based on data-driven decisions. As a signatory to the United Nations Climate Change Fashion Charter on Climate Action, tentree has agreed to create Science-based targets and chart a roadmap towards progress. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that climate change is unequivocally human-induced, it is important that the fashion industry show leadership and chart a path towards the 1.5oC future pathway demonstrating the role businesses have to the planet and responsible business practices.

Beyond GDP – Metric Feasibility Study

The performance of an economy has largely been measured by one dominant metric above all – GDP. Measuring economic prosperity through a singular metric fails to consider other economic growth factors that extend beyond
GDP that contribute to the prosperity of a country and its citizens. This project will assess the leading ‘Beyond GDP’ metrics that seek to better measure economic prosperity and recommend the most impactful metrics to track
based our local context. The insights collected from this research will lend to providing an alternative economic prosperity framework for the VEC to leverage and publicize (in terms of informing policy at a city, provincial and
national level).

This project aims to challenge unjust systems and policies and support Indigenous people in their efforts to establish their food systems and adapt to the new COVID-19 world. It will explore ways to address long-term pandemic-related food security challenges led by Indigenous organizations. The intern will gather information from experiences and existing research across Indigenous communities about existing challenges and potential opportunities to achieve food security and food sovereignty. Using this research, the intern will support the creation of an Indigenous-led knowledge sharing platform.

Mesure distante et analyse de la consommation des foyers munis de bornes de recharge pour voitures électriques en multilogement

Ce projet a pour objectif principal d’acquérir des données sur la consommation électrique des chargeurs pour
véhicules électriques. L’acquisition de ces données se fera à l’aide de contrôleurs de charge déployés dans des
immeubles à logements et en copropriété. Ces données serviront à améliorer le processus de gestion de la charge
des véhicules électriques et faciliteront la prévision de la consommation durant les périodes de pointe. L’atteinte
de cet objectif exige la conception d’un dispositif intelligent connecté qui échantillonnera d’une façon périodique
la consommation électrique des bornes de charge. Le dispositif intelligent doit aussi transmettre les données
d’une façon fiable et sécuritaire vers un stockage infonuagique pour la visualisation et le traitement prédictif. La
prévision de la consommation électrique sera basée sur des méthodes d’intelligence artificielle. À l’heure actuelle,
il n’existe pas un portail de consommation des véhicules électriques pour les immeubles à logements en
copropriété.

Rural Development Network/U of A School of Public Health – Coordinated Access for Rural Homelessness

Homelessness is a social issue and is defined as a state of unstable, inappropriate, and inconsistent housing. It is linked to the social determinants of health and can result in negative personal and health-related outcomes. As such, the Rural Development Network’s (RDN) homelessness initiatives emerged due to a lack of recognition, data and understanding of homelessness in rural Canada. Homelessness is often more visible in urban spaces than rural communities, and there are often fewer resources and supports available to those experiencing homelessness in rural areas. Therefore, collaboration on a local and regional scale of relevant services can efficiently leverage resources, knowledge and skills to help clients who are experiencing rural homelessness. This is referred to as “coordinated access.” Drawing on both research and data from direct engagement with communities, this project seeks to explore how coordinated access may be implemented in rural Canada. This project will assess the strengths and challenges of implementing coordinated access in rural & remote communities through analysis of existing organizational data and relevant research.

Patient experience of facial plastic surgery

Facial plastic surgery is a multibillion dollar industry in North America. Most surgeries are performed for cosmetic reasons, driven by patient goals. 63% of facial plastic surgeons use software to help people visualize possible surgical results. Deep Surface AI is developing a novel visualization software to help surgeons and patients decide on surgical goals. Deep Surface AI is particularly interested in patient experiences of rhinoplasty and gender-affirming facial surgery. Rhinoplasty (nose re-shaping) is the most common procedure, performed by 99% of facial plastic surgeons. Patients typically want rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons and outcomes are aesthetically driven. In contrast, gender-affirming facial surgery (GFS) is an emerging field that may help transgender patients to socially affirm their identity. Transgender persons face significant socioeconomic challenges and their reasons for surgery are drastically different than the rhinoplasty patient. GFS outcomes and goals are complex to visualize for both surgeons and patients. Deep Surface AI’s software product has the potential to improve the experience.
The proposed project will gather insights on patient journeys. Data will be collected through existing online websites and social media where patients have publicly shared their experiences.

Circular manufacturing development for production of customizable fashion footwear using 3D printing

Many problems in fashion originate from over consumerism and resulted in lower quality goods, poor working
conditions, and detrimental impact to the planet. The fashion industry has recently shifted toward better
environmental practices but focus has been on apparel because shoes are complex products. ARSHAE, located
in Montréal, proposes an end-to-end solution that accounts for the entire life cycle of shoes by building a closed
loop system that enables zero waste. ARSHAE focuses on using ecological materials in hyper-localized mini
factories powered by 3D printing.
3D printing is a highly interesting and disruptive solution presenting unlimited potential for the footwear industry.
Moreover, it has a potential to drastically reduce the time to market and deliver personalized shoes on demand
considering customer preferences and needs to unpreceded level. However, developments are still in its infancy
and a fully 3D printed shoe is challenging to achieve. Sofar, only few components of a shoe are 3D printed by
some by large global footwear companies.
Building on solid fashion design expertise and a comprehensive and solid review already performed by ARSHAE,
the company needs support on specific engineering expertise.

Developing an educational module for multi-stakeholder facilitation linking nature-based climate solutions and IPCAs

Six million people in rural and Indigenous communities in Canada face water insecurity and associated risks to ecosystem functioning and biodiversity loss. Many of these communities could benefit from the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBCS). One challenge in the widespread implementation of these solutions is appropriate knowledge-sharing pathways, particularly in rural and Indigenous communities. This project will use the principles of reconciliation to develop strategies for knowledge dissemination in local communities. With the Isaak Olam Foundation, the intern will develop a module on the principles of ethical protocols to guide the interactions with and between community watershed stewardship groups, First Nation communities, government, and diverse interdisciplinary researchers.
