Deep Breathe: Developing and integrating deep learning strategies to automate and augment the interpretation of lung ultrasound images

Project Deep Breathe seeks to develop computer vision solutions that will aid in the use of lung ultrasound technology to accurately and easily diagnose lung conditions anywhere these portable machines can be brought. This will be done using large amount of lung ultrasound data at Western University and by employing artificial intelligence students from the University of Waterloo. The partnering organization – Alveolai Data Fuel – stands to benefit through possible commercialization of the resultant intellectual property from these research efforts.

Characterization of SQUID amplifiers for optical TES readout and exploring multiplexing approaches

While current work in quantum computing with near term noisy devices is promising, key applications will require a universal, error-corrected and fault tolerant quantum computer. Xanadu’s proposed architecture uses photon number resolving detectors in a modular way to create photonic qubits. The detectors are based on superconducting transition edge sensors (TES). Previously, TES has been limited to bespoke experiments mostly within university labs requiring niche specialists to operate as well as daily laborious optimization. Xanadu is developing the first turn-key TES detectors and has already deployed them in their photonic quantum cloud computing system.
A key property of the TES detector, in addition to photon number resolution, is the quantum efficiency (QE). A high QE across all detectors is critical for realizing a universal fault tolerant photonic quantum computer. Accurate, automated measurements of QE across many devices is a key challenge. This project aims to develop a cutting-edge, turn-key, QE measurement system.

Safety App Plugin for Women who Experience Dating-App Facilitated Sexualized Violence

While online dating has been available for many years, the increase in modern technology has spurred a growth in the
amount of online dating apps and dating app users. There is reason to believe that as dating moves online, so does
sexualized violence against women. This project will examine how various online dating apps are facilitating experiences
of sexualized violence against women and how their safety can be improved through plugin technology. The findings from
this research are anticipated to create a safer environment for dating app platforms and reduce women’s experiences of
dating app facilitated sexualized violence in Atlantic Canada and beyond.

An evaluation of geohazards arising from gas hydrate dissociation in Canadian continentalmargins

The long-term research goal of the research group is to contribute to the fundamental state-of-knowledge on gas hydrates by improving methodologies and techniques for characterization, assessment, and development of natural gas hydrate accumulations. The short-term goal and main objective of the present proposal is to characterize and assess submarine geohazards evolving from gas hydrate instability. To achieve this goal, an integrated experimental and theoretical research program is proposed, with the key objectives of: a) development of a numerical slope stability model which includes a transient, coupled pore pressure-deformation analysis; b) development of algorithms for introducing excess pore pressures due to gas hydrate dissociation into transient pore pressure-deformation analyses; c) identification of changes in stiffness, strength and permeability that can be expected as a result of hydrate dissociation through experimental testing; d) verification of the numerical model using the experimental testing results; e) analyses of several continental slope failures where hydrate dissociation has been identified as a potential triggering/propagation mechanism; and f) predictive analyses of potential geohazards arising from hydrate dissociation along the Canadian continental margins.

Le dialogue interculturel chez Gadamer

Dans notre recherche, nous allons partir de la théorie de la compréhension de Gadamer pour mener une réflexion sur la question du potentiel et des limites du dialogue interculturel, en tant que principe de base du vivre ensemble. L’herméneutique de Gadamer fait ressortir les conditions de base du dialogue interculturel, telles que l’ouverture des participants au dialogue, leur capacité de questionner et de changer leur propre position, et celle d’adopter le point de vue de l’interlocuteur (de se mettre à sa place). Tel que nous entendons le montrer dans notre projet de recherche, la capacité de l’être humain de s’ouvrir au dialogue et d’être à l’écoute de l’autre en vue de comprendre son point de vue dépend de la Bildung qu’il reçoit, en tant que cette dernière l’amène à dépasser son horizon personnel, forgé par sa culture particulière, et à accueillir l’altérité d’autres horizons. Ce sera notre problématique de recherche. Nous aurons alors à mettre en relief ce que l’herméneutique de Gadamer peut nous enseigner sur le problème du potentiel et des limites du dialogue interculturel.

Development of Streamlined Data Processing Pipeline for Untargeted Metabolomics

Metabolomics is the study of the complete set of small molecules in human body. It is a cutting-edge technology that empowers precision health and drug discovery. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system is the most sensitive analytical platform for metabolomics. However, computer programs are urgently needed to automatically process metabolomics data. This project will incorporate state-of-the-art signal extraction algorithms to develop an automated pipeline of data processing. The developed program will accelerate metabolomics-guided precision health research and business development in BioTwin.

High Voltage Photo Transducers

There is a growing need for high voltage isolated DC/DC converters with a low form factor, for application in the electric automotive, renewable energy, and consumer electronic sectors. In this project, we propose to use the know-how of Université de Sherbrooke micro/nano fabrication of semiconductor devices with the unique optocouplers technology commercialised by Broadcom, to microfabricate devices with multiplied the output voltage by more than 50. The objective of this project is to evaluate the potential of optocouplers for up conversion with output voltage of 800V using DC input voltage of ~2V.
This project will provide the opportunity for 4 HQPs training and will offer a unique Canadian technology that can be a game changer in the growing market of electrical mobility, actuators, optics, displays, and more generally, for any electrical sectors that use high voltage DC bus.

Spatial variation in the foraging and nutritional ecology of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) in the Kivalliq region

This research project will examine the diets of two geographically separate populations of Arctic char in proximity to the communities of Rankin Inlet and Naujaat, Nunavut. Using methods of stomach content, stable isotope, and highly branched isoprenoid analysis, we will determine whether the diets differ between the two separate populations. In addition, we will explore multiple quantitative and qualitative methods such as chromatography and the use of colour palettes to determine whether Arctic char diet has an influence on their flesh colour. This project came to fruition as research priorities arose within communities across the Kivalliq region surrounding Arctic char diet and flesh colour. As the objectives of this project were formulated through a bottom-up approach, community members will also be consulted on the matter to incorporate an aspect of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), or Inuit traditional knowledge.

Deep Learning Dataset Augmentation for Detecting Rare and Severe Contaminants in Waste Management Collection.

This project strives to identify rare and severe contaminants found in residential curbside recycling. Using computer vision techniques and machine learning, cameras analyze contaminants as they are tipped into recycling trucks. Some of these contaminants are rare, however they can pose severe risks to operators and the general public. As these contaminants are not common, they are difficult to detect. By enabling municipalities the means to collect data on previously unidentifiable items, a multitude of new approaches will be developed for education and outreach. The ultimate effect of these activities will be proper recycling practices which promotes a circular economy, thereby reducing our dependence on virgin plastics and fossil fuels.

Lake Kivu Degasification Reservoir Engineering Study

Lake Kivu is a unique lake with a significant amount of methane and CO2 dissolved in its deep layer. The presence of these greenhouse gases poses a potential danger of massive disaster. The extraction of methane is viewed as a possible and profitable solution as the reduction of methane will enhance the ability of the lake water to absorb more incoming CO2, consequently reducing the risk of uncontrolled gas eruption. The safe extraction of methane requires comprehensive study about the transport processes involved with the production of methane and reinjection of degassed water into the lake. We propose an extensive analysis of the extraction, separation, and economic evaluation of lake methane. We also plan to assess the stability of the water body by conducting a numerical experiment that will account for net withdrawal of gases, reinjection of produced water and subaquatic water influx.

Incorporation de lignines Organosolv dans la formulation de mousses PU et d’adhésifs pour panneaux de bois agglomérés

L’objectif général de ce projet de recherche est d’évaluer le potentiel des lignines produites par un nouveau procédé Organosolv pour la formulation d’adhésifs PF et pMDI. Des modifications chimiques (phénolation, déméthylation, méthylolation) seront considérées pour optimiser le potentiel des lignines. Les adhésifs seront ensuite testés pour la production in-situ de PFMD à partir de la cellulose Organosolv co-produite par le procédé. Dans un souci de diversification des débouchés, les lignines modifiées seront également testées pour la production de mousses PU.

Autonomous Metro Rail Sensor Data Analytics for Anomaly Detection and Correlation Analysis with Environmental Variables

Anomaly Detection (AD) is a key research problem in the fast-evolving area of Intelligent Transportation Systems. To proactively detect faults, AD methods are applied to detect deviation from regular behavior, which can also be caused by environmental factors such as weather conditions, neighbouring trains, and track curvature. Thales Canada has unlabeled data from their Next-Generation Positioning System (NGPS) on-board their Train Autonomy Platform which contains speed and positioning readings from sensors onboard multiple trains collected over multiple years. The project will develop an AD tool to identify anomalous readings in the NGPS data by modeling the regular behavior of the train for different source and destination, number of stops, and time of the day, and thereby, identify anomalous behavior, and compute correlations of the run data with external factors. The AD tool will allow Thales to automate the metro-rail system with minimal human supervision and ensure a safer metro-rail system.
