Assessing the Validity and Reliability of a Client Risk Profile Assessment Method

Client risk is one of the major decisions in wealth management. Many of the client risk assessment methods that are used in wealth management are in-house developed on an ad-hoc basis. The objective of this research is to assess the validity and reliability of the risk assessments methods developed by RiskMetrics. This study will be performed by analyzing the validity of the questionnaire and the reliability of the risk assessment result. The questionnaire will be assessed based on expert opinion and published literature. Multiple research methods, the RiskMetric method, expert opinion, and alternative client risk assessment methods will be used in case studies to observe the result. The results of this study will provide recommendations to enhance the current client risk assessment methods used in the wealth management industry.

Equity in Rural Transit: Investigating the Feasibility of Permanent Public Transit in Wellington County, Ontario

The availability and reliability of public transit has been a long standing equity issue for residents living in rural communities. This issue significantly impacts those who have lower incomes, the elderly, children, and people with disabilities. Access to of consistent and secure funding has been the main factor challenging the sustainability of rural transit. This research focuses on understanding funding opportunities, challenges, and solutions for rural communities through a case-study of RIDE WELL in Wellington County, Ontario. With a better understanding of how public transit can be sustainably planned and funded, community leadership can equitably direct future strategic plans to accommodate for those who need transit most. The outcomes of this research will benefit local and regional stakeholders, including Dillon Consulting, to assist other rural municipalities in building equitable and sustainable rural transit service models – an area of evidence-based research that remains a significant focus for government, and rural development researchers across Canada and around the world.

Aeration design and bioreactor optimization for nutrient recycling systems

This research project will look to help Cultivated Ecosystems Ltd. redesign their current reactor that they use for generating organic nutrients and beneficial micro-organisms to enable them to produce the quantities needed on a regular basis for commercialization. It will look at how these micro-organisms grow under different conditions and create new equipment that will ensure the products formed are beneficial for plants and soils. By creating new ways of mixing the reactor contents and keeping oxygen levels high during operation, the outcome of this work will result in a way of growing these micro-organisms that is unique to Cultivated Ecosystems Ltd, offering a competitive advantage as they look to scale up and commercialize this technology more broadly.

Gold Nanoparticle based Biosensor to detect viral RNA in vitro by colorimetry

The proposed project involves COVID-19 detection using solution of gold nanoparticles. Upon detection, the gold solution changes its color from red to blue. The solution contains gold nanoparticles with biomolecules that can detect SARS-Cov-2 virus genome that causes COVID-19. The first step is to take saliva sample from the patient and put it inside the first red solution. Then second amplification solution (which contains displacer and linker) is added to enhance the blue color and it increases the sensitivity of the detection. This method does not require any temperature control system, nor any expensive lab equipment. The color change can be observed with naked eyes and the solution changes color rapidly upon detecting the virus. Galenvs is a company that develops different kits to extract viral RNA genome and this biosensor can be used to detect any viral RNA and hence based on this principle, we can develop different viral RNA detection kits. The partner organization will have the ability to manufacture these viral RNA detection kits on a large scale.

HeliCat Canada Indigenous Relations Strategic Engagement Plan

In today’s landscape, it is important for businesses to acknowledge the complex histories of the land on which they operate and engage with truth and reconciliation within their policies and practices. The goal of this project is to support Helicat Canada (HCC) with its reconciliation efforts with local Indigenous Peoples by developing a strategic engagement plan to support mutually beneficial relations between HCC and its members and Indigenous Peoples. Our project will develop specific metrics for monitoring sector involvement with Indigenous Peoples – HCC initiatives, such as training, employment, and procurement to establish baseline and drive progress. In addition, this will offer ways for HCC to integrate social risk and opportunity, human rights, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples into how they do business, as well as through their individual actions and behaviours.

An Environmental Management System for the Town of Georgina’s Wastewater Collection System

This study will identify a practical approach to bring a standard mid-size municipality into adherence with the ISO 14001, Environmental Management System standard, for its municipal wastewater system. This will increase the levels of government regulatory compliance, resilience on municipal infrastructure and reduction of risks for basement flooding, spills and overflows of raw sewage to the environment.

System identification and control of fixed wingunmanned aerial vehicles

MicroPilot, a company located in Manitoba, is specialized in design and manufacturing of autopilot systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The company’s interest is to develop accurate simulation models of various UAVs, upon which the autopilot systems are tuned and verified first. The goal of this project is to evaluate and improve the model structure adopted, and develop appropriate tools for extracting accurate models to be used by the simulation. The challenge is to find tools that allow model parameters to be adequately identified, given minimum flight test data and limited sensory information. The outcome of this project will provide MicroPilot with a technology for enhanced control of various classes of UAVs. Accurate model identification is essential to optimize the design of the autopilot systems without excessive flight tests. This in turn will reduce the manufacturing expenses, allowing MicroPilot to compete stronger with its competitors.

A novel intraocular injectable platform for long-term treatment of retinal diseases.

Retinal diseases are the leading causes of blindness in Canada. Retinal diseases are currently treated by monthly or bimonthly intraocular injections of biologics. At the Sheardown lab, we are developing a new injectable hydrogel that can provide prolonged treatment for retinal diseases. Upon injection, the new treatment forms a transparent solid depot inside the eye that doesn’t interfere with the patient’s vision. The depot provides sustained release of the biologics over several months and is completely resorbable after delivery of its payload. The new treatment aims at reducing the frequency of intraocular injections to improve patient convenience and reduce the burden on ophthalmology clinics.
