Consuming Enterprise Cloud Data on Mobile devices and Desktops

As the mobile landscape continues to grow and diverge, there is the need to start looking for innovative ways to
facilitate the Business-to-Business (B2B) use of mobile devices to support cloud hosted enterprise data. For
most enterprises, the bigger hurdle is how to support the enterprise system access from the mobile while
ensuring business continuity in cases of disconnections. This project seeks to investigate the state-of-the –art
research methodologies that support access to offline data by the mobile end users. Also, the project will
explore options that will enhance the deployment of an enterprise-centric system that utilizes both the public and
private cloud services. This research puts the partner organization in a strategic position to broaden out their
offerings of products to different mobile devices and better satisfy their customer’s needs.

Design of Mobile Natural Interfaces for Visualization and Management of Large Patient Databases

This project, in partnership with The Boeing Company, four Canadian universities (UBC, SFU,
OCADU and Dalhousie), a team of universities in Brazil led by the Federal University of Sao Carlos
(UFSCar), and a special chronic care hospital in Brazil for individuals with neurological and brain
disorders, intends to focus on health care professionals and administrators responsible for
transitioning patients to live in society again. As changes in the therapeutic procedures for patients
mean changes in the working procedures for health professionals, this project looks mainly to
investigate how natural user interfaces (NUIs) can be designed to enhance natural interaction among
health professionals to lead to a more connected, tuned and active community, with specific attention
to designing for managing and visualizing large quantities of patient and administrative data within the
nomadic context of their work. This project will bring significant benefits to Boeing in the areas of

PCR lab-on-chip system for rapid and sensitive identification of SARS-CoV-2 infected case

There is an urgent call for development of fast and sensitive diagnostic tools for early and on-site detection of infected individuals for containment of the current COVID-19 outbreak. These tools should also require minimal training procedures so that personnel with different backgrounds can run them on-site and get accurate data in short periods of time. In response to this need, here through an interdisciplinary research we aim to develop a novel, portable PCR lab-on-chip system to detect infected individuals with SARS-CoV-2 (in replacement of sending samples to specific labs for analysis, which may take days). It is noteworthy that the cost of the tests via the proposed system is estimated to be about $3/test, i.e. significantly lower than current detection methods. For the new tool, we are proposing to use self-collecting, non-invasive saliva sampling, which can be achieved even at individuals’ homes.

l’outil des carnets de competences : analyse et recommandations

Dans un contexte où la main d’oeuvre qualifiée de la division a des connaissances spécifiques qui ne peuvent être acquises dans un milieu académique et où, beaucoup partiront à la retraite dans les prochaines années , la direction a décidé de revoir sa stratégie en matière de gestion des connaissances et des compétences des employés de l’organisation. Des carnets de compétences ont été développés, pour chaque postes à criticité élevé, dans le but de créer des plans génériques de développement des compétences. Suite à leur mise en action, un questionnaire envoyé aux utilisateurs principaux de ces carnets afin d’avoir leurs opinions. Seulement la moitié des super-utilisateurs ont répondu au sondage et sur ce nombre, certains répondants n’utilisaient pas efficacement les carnets de compétences. Sachant qu’une somme importante d’argent y a été investie en temps et ressources informatiques, qu’ils ont eus à mobiliser diverses parties prenantes dans le processus de créations…..(tobecont’d)

Challenge and Virtual Environment Research to support Social and Economic Recovery from the Coronavirus Crisis

The coronavirus crisis has disrupted the social and economic fabric of communities around the world. This has profound implications for the sustainability and innovation challenges those communities are facing, and for the higher education institutions and professional educational businesses who have missions to prepare and support those communities to tackle those challenges.
This research will identify, document and generate recommendations for addressing several aspects of the social and economic disruption caused by the coronavirus crisis. The knowledge generated by this research will be invaluable for How to Change the World Canada and its partner network of Canadian universities and colleges, business and governments as they develop and implement their strategic adaptions to the coronavirus crisis.
This underpinning aspiration of this research is to inform and stimulate a social and economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis in Canada that is as sustainable, inclusive and empowering as possible for every Canadian.

Validation numerique du logiciel de simulation GHE_SIM

En 2011, les professeurs Bernier, Kummert, Marcotte et Pasquier de l’I~cole Poly technique
de Montreal ont entrepris Ie developpement d’un logiciel de simulation en geothermie
(GHE_Sim). Ce logiciel utilise une approche spectrale afin d’accelerer Ie calcul de la
superposition temporelie et une technique novatrice pour tenir compte adequatement de
I’interaction thermique entre les puits d’un meme champ geothermique. II en resulte un
algorithme de calcul pouvant simuler la temperature du flu ide entrant a une thermopompe
geothermique tres rapidement. Le projet de recherche propose vise a valider numeriquement
les resultats fournis par GHE_Sim et ainsi assurer aux utilisateurs futurs du logiciel des
resultats exacts.
Geo-Energie inc. souhaite utiliser a moyen terme GHE_Sim afin d’ameliorer la qualite des
services offerts a ses clients. La participation de Geo-Energie inc. a ce projet permettra a
les resultats fournis par GHE_Sirn et ainsi assurer aux utilisateurs futurs du logiciel des
resultats exacts.

Improving & Evaluating Aerosol PPE & Containment Devices for COVID-19 Virus

The coronavirus disease, COVID-19, has rapidly changed the way we live and work. Across Canada, many non-essential workplaces were directed to suspend normal operations and, though the pandemic continues, these restrictions are slowly being lifted, and workers are returning to work. Workers, employers, unions, and policy makers need guidance on how to best reduce exposure and prevent transmission of the novel coronavirus.
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group) and researchers from the University of Toronto are working together with experts across the country to develop evidence-informed guidance to help protect workers during the pandemic. This project will support safer re-opening of workplaces during the COVID-19 pandemic and help to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in Canadian workplaces.

Biogeographical modeling of coronavirus dispersal

The project will reformulate the coronavirus dispersal hypothesis to food web disturbance caused by ‘social mood’ of human behaviors. We will develop a dynamic system-theoretic model to capture the change pattern of such a “social mood” and identify early warning indictors. The approach will be an advance for understanding the pathogen dispersal risk among those known- and unknown- susceptible species along the food web. This will be very important for contingency plans of COVID-19, especially in travel recommendations and pathogen containment.

Surdité et sécurité en situation d’urgence : le cas de l’Outaouais

Le projet vise à décrire le vécu des personnes sourdes et malentendantes de l’Outaouais lors de situations d’urgence comme les pandémies ou les catastrophes naturelles, et de proposer des interventions pour répondre à leur besoins. Il se fait en partenariat avec l’Association de l’ouïe de l’Outaouais qui le seul organisme reconnu par le gouvernement du Québec ayant pour mission de regrouper les personnes vivant avec une surdité sur le territoire de l’Outaouais. Le projet permet aussi de développer des partenariats avec d’autres organismes qui œuvrent auprès des personnes sourdes et malentendantes au Québec et au Canada, ainsi qu’avec des partenaires qui travaillent pour prévenir et intervenir en situation d’urgence. Le projet permet ainsi de renforcer les liens entre les personnes impliquées ou concernées par l’accès aux services en situation d’urgence et de développer leur pouvoir d’agir. Le projet permet aussi de produire de nouvelles connaissances sur la thématique, d’inspirer d’autres interventions et d’améliorer ainsi la sécurité et la santé des personnes sourdes et malentendantes en Outaouais, et au Canada.

Leveraging a social learning space for disability sport to mitigate the impact of Covid-19

The project aims to understand and support Canadian wheelchair curling leaders (i.e., coaches, athletes, and sport administrators) to return to sport and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Bringing coaches together virtually and educating them to provide athlete support remotely can have a positive effect on the sport landscape post-pandemic. The intern will identify the sport gaps and strengths and align Curling Canada’s resources and goals with provincial return to play guidelines. The research activities include conducting interviews with stakeholders, analyzing the data, writing both research and applied reports for knowledge translation. The applied learning activities involve nurturing the social learning space based on the needs of the stakeholders as per the research activities. The expected outcomes are facilitating the communication between wheelchair curling leaders by providing a social learning space and publishing of two papers in peer review journals. The project will inform other Canadian disability sport organizations.

Predicting risk of unplanned hospital readmission within 30-days of discharge using machine learning approaches

Unplanned hospital readmissions are a preventable and costly outcome in the health care system. There are limited tools to estimate risk of readmission. The machine learning process offers an opportunity to develop a risk predictor to identify those at high risk of readmission upon discharge. OKAKI has an opportunity to diversify the commercial products it can offer to health care administrators.

Improving Surveillance of Healthcare Associated Infections in Canada

People should never have to worry about getting an infection while in the hospital or in a long-term care home. Yet every year, many Canadians suffer harm and, in some cases, death following the development of an infection while receiving healthcare. Counting and reporting these infections is a very important step in the prevention of infections. However, the methods used to collect, and report infections differs across regions, provinces, and territories in Canada. This makes it difficult to know where problems exist, set goals for improvement, and monitor results across the country to be sure things are getting better. Every patient deserves safe care in Canada. This project will help protect Canadian patients from harmful infections by providing better information in order to intervene and provide prompt preventative actions.
