Improved detection of pathogenic E. coli

This project is going to evaluate an experimental media for improved detection of pathogenic E. coli, the same type of E. coli that led to the recent outbreak in Calgary daycares that affected approximately 320 children. We
will be rigorously testing the new media by evaluating the abundant E. coli present in the feces of feedlot cattle.
We will also compare the ability of the new media to the current industry gold standards for detection of pathogenic E. coli. We hope that the new media finds all the potentially disease-causing E. coli and more identified by the
current industry standard methods. If the new media works as expected, it will streamline detection of pathogenic E. coli from food products and hopefully reduce future disease outbreaks and product recalls.

Assessing the impact of pipeline construction activity on nest attendance behaviour of migratory birds.

The study’s primary goal is to understand the impact of pipeline construction on the behaviour of migratory birds. It will focus on assessing how the proximity to different construction activities, different habitats, environmental conditions and nature of construction work affect nest attendance, alertness and flushing behaviour of the migrants. Anthropogenic activities can adversely affect the migratory birds, especially during the nesting phase of their lives. While different measure like buffers and setbacks are often employed to mitigate the disturbance, there remains a gap in understanding their effectiveness. By this study, the data collected during the pipeline construction will be analyzed to answer important questions on the ecology of the migratory birds. With the help of this research project, Trans Mountain Corporation aims to provide not only useful insights and knowledge on how birds react to the different types of anthropogenic disturbances during pipeline construction but also to aid in management planning for the conservation of the bird species.

Development of Microcystinase Enzymes and Immobilization into a Microcystin-Degrading Cartridge for Water Treatment.

The project consists of developing a device for degrading a harmful toxin produced during algal bloom in water supply. The cyanotoxin mycrocystin-LR is one of the major toxins produced by certain cyanobacteria that are present in large quantities in microalgal or cyanobacterial blooms. The benefits of this project for Naturia Technologies will be important since it will allow the company to position itself into the manufacturing market for such type of enzymes for which an important market place is to be filled. The enzymes themselves can constitute products that can be manufactured and sold on the market (for research use) via different distributors and can also serve as the components of the cartridge that can be used to degrade microcystin in contaminated water from lakes or municipal water. The format of the cartridge will take different forms such as floating cartridge for decontaminating lakes after cyanobacterial blooms and/or as part of the municipal water treatment facility. Different partnerships with the government of Canada and of Québec as well as with municipalities will be established to implement such a biotechnological device for water treatment.

Cartographies of change: visualizing landscape transformation through participatory photo-mapping in the Crowsnest Pass

The practice of mining creates visible and invisible legacies on lands and livelihoods. In Canada, the mining
industry has left a large footprint on the landscape, whose recovery is required through ecological restoration
actions. However, current restoration practices face the pressure of adapting to a changing climate while also
taking into account the relationships people have developed with the landscapes they inhabit. How might these
practices evolve to meaningfully integrate these experiences and successfully recover both ecological and
cultural components of degraded lands? Working in partnership with Wildsight, this project will use historical and
repeated photographs of the Crowsnest Pass region in Alberta and British Columbia to understand and map
how people perceive change within mined areas. These images will provide an opportunity to (re)imagine the
landscape and engage community members in considering different visions of and for their region.

Two-step CO2 Capture and Storage Technology using Seawater and Mineral Carbonation of Mine Water Pool of Sydney Coalfields

Our CBU Research Team is working with Net-Zero Atlantic under the NZA Program to develop a point-source carbon capture and storage technology that 1) uses a capture medium constituted from seawater and 2) employs a technique that permanently sequesters the captured carbon as metal carbonates using the contaminated water of flooded former mines. This work will focus on the decommissioned mines of the Sydney Coalfield in Cape Breton and aims to be an inexpensive, portable, and easy-to-use procedure for capturing CO2 at the source.

Coal mining in Cape Breton’s Sydney Coalfield lasted nearly three centuries, leaving behind ten abandoned and interconnected underground mines. These underground mines have been ?lled with roughly 190 million m³ of now contaminated water enriched in iron, sulphide, metals (e.g., calcium, magnesium and manganese), and metalloids, classifying it as acid mine drainage (AMD). Recent advances in CO2 sequestration have found that mineral carbonation, which involves a reaction between CO2 and divalent metallic elements such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, is the best and most energy-efficient option for permanently sequestering CO2. Hence, the mines of the Sydney Coalfield are an excellent candidate for the permanent sinking of CO2…
