Steve’s Week in Policy: June 23, 2016

The Mitacs Policy Team has been keeping busy over the past few weeks:

• In May, Mitacs convened two panel discussions in Ottawa to explore the challenges and opportunities facing PhDs in Canada. Check out the Storify page to see what audience members thought/tweeted, and access the photo gallery here.
• A briefing on building effective IP policies to promote collaboration in BC was published on the Business Council of British Columbia website.
• A blog for our panel at Congress 2016 on the evolving role of the professor is live on the Congress website.

Beyond policy-specific topics, some other links that may be of interest are below:

• Women are significantly underrepresented on the boards of top venture firms, and probably not by coincidence, are less likely to get funded as entrepreneurs. What gives?
• The World Economic Forum highlights the relationship between investing in R&D and productivity, while in Canada, Statistics Canada data on anticipated spending shows a mixed bag, where GERD is up but BERD is down.
• ICYMI, Alex Usher wrote a post about the need to be clear about what we mean when we talk about “innovation.”
