Bridge engineers deal with various bridge systems to satisfy ever-increased bridge design requirements in safety, functionality, cost, aesthetics, etc. The proposed project aims to investigate in depth the stability and dynamic behaviours of two distinguished bridge systems. One is the shallow steel arch bridge susceptible to non-linear snap-through buckling, and the other is the railway bridge subjected to significant train-bridge dynamic interaction. The interns will conduct a detailed numerical analysis of a real-world shallow arch bridge to quantify to what degree the internal forces would be amplified under snap-through buckling. In addition, a bridge-track-train dynamic interaction model will be developed to examine the structural integrity of the bridge and track, and the riding comfort of the train for railway bridges. Research outcomes will place the industry partner, SYSTRA IBT, a worldleading pioneer in the analysis and design of shallow arch bridges and railway bridges.
