Agronomic effectiveness of composted phosphorus-rich sludge generated from the chemical treatment of municipal wastewater

Phosphorus-rich sludge generated from the chemical treatment of wastewater lagoons presents a significant challenge for municipalities without effective long-term sludge management strategies. This study explores the potential benefits of using composted phosphorus-rich chemical precipitated sludge as a soil amendment for agriculture. Sludge composted under controlled conditions and adequate bulking agents with the proper ratio to sludge will be applied to canola and wheat crops to compare crop health and yield against crops grown with commercial fertilizer and no fertilizer. The research will also assess the impact of the compost on soil physical properties and runoff mitigation. Results will (1) provide insights into the bioavailability of phosphorus from the composted sludge for plant uptake and (2) highlight the value of recovering phosphorus from wastewater and its sustainable reuse in agriculture, contributing to a circular economy.
