The provision of emergency medical services to the oil and gas industry operating in the North Atlantic presents a number of unqiue challenges. Prolonged, weather-dependent transport times place tremendous strain on isolated medical providers in emergency situations. As a result, practitioners may be required to perform life-sustaining procedures outside of their training. Memorial University researchers have partnered with Praxes Medical Group to develop an emergency telemedicine research lab designed to identify and address issues pertaining to the provision of remote healthcare for the offshore oil industry. It is anticipated that knowledge and technologies developed at Memorial will also address healthcare challenges faced by the people living in underserviced locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
