Assessment of resistant starch in extruded and canned pet food formulations

Extruded pet foods are produced using steam, water, and shear that gelatinize starches in the formula. The type of starch and extrusion parameters influence the texture, palatability, and expansion of the kibble. Different types of starch may be less accessible to digestive enzymes. Resistant starch, an indigestible starch that is fermented by bacteria in the gut, may have some positive health impacts on pets. Taplow Ventures Ltd produces extruded and canned pet food under the brands FirstMate and KASIKS. Given the potential benefits of resistant starch to overall pet health and the variation present in commercially available pet foods, the objectives are to quantify the levels of resistant starch in pet food and better understand the potential impacts of increased resistant starch on overall pet health. This will be carried out using established analytical methodologies (e.g., enzymatic) to quantify resistant starch and in vitro digestibility.
