Herbivorous insects constitute the majority of our planet’s terrestrial biodiversity, but the species that are best studied are those that are considered pests. This project surveys taxonomic and functional diversity of defoliator communities in both plantations and natural regeneration of white spruce, and relates it to foliar damage and consequences for tree growth. Climate disruption shows species moving their distribution ranges north, and this research will permit identification of novel pest herbivores on the most economically important boreal species, white spruce.
