This pharmacognosy (medicines from plant origins) project will examine the potential of Bupleurum falcatum leaf extracts for anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis outcomes in cell culture systems. Among its constituents, chlorogenic acid and rutin (both polyphenol compounds) have been reported to regulate bone osteoclast and cartilage cell function, and both are among the most abundant compounds extracted from B. falcatum leaves. The planned experimental approach to derivatize and formulate extracted chlorogenic acid and rutin will significantly improve their bone bioavailabilty and will support their future development as potential therapeutics for treatment of arthritis patients.
