Felix Wiemer and Pauline Maier will perform internships in the Boreal Ecosystem Recovery and Assessment (BERA) program as Part of Greg McDermid’s Applied Geospatial Research Group: a research laboratory at the University of Calgary. The BERA program is a multi-sectoral research partnership whose central goal is to understand the effects of industrial disturbance on natural ecosystem dynamics in the boreal forest, and to develop strategies for restoring disturbed landscapes. Ms Maier and Mr Wiemer will complete projects on measuring morphology and microtopography (Project 1) and modeling wetlands and water availability (Project 2). It is anticipated that these research internships will provide the foundation for Ms Maier’s and Mr Wiemer’s masters theses when they return home to Germany at the end of their Canadian internships. Greg McDermid, the host supervisor, and Ralf Ludwig, the international supervisor, are both part of the Alberta-Bavaria Research Network (www.abby-net.org): a grass-roots collaboration of academics from Alberta and Bavaria who have been collaborating on the training of HQP since 2012.
