Small-scale fisheries and the seafood systems they support in Canada are not well understood. It is unknown exactly how many people participate in small-scale fisheries, the types of fisheries operations they have, or where they sell their catch. The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) hosts a network called Local Catch Canada (LCC) , which is a practitioner-driven network interested in peer-to-peer information sharing and support, focused on building an equitable, community-based seafood system in Canada. This network is interested in identifying and bringing together seafood harvesters throughout the lands and waters colonially known as Canada who are interested in providing seafood products to local and regional communities. To do this, EAC, LCC, the academic partner, and the intern will create an inventory and public map of any and all people who participate in small-scale seafood harvest or cultivation (i.e., kelp) and are providing their product to local communities and food systems. The outcome of this project will be to identify who is currently working in Canada’s small-scale seafood systems, where they are working and providing their product, and share that information via an interactive, open-source map. The goal is to connect seafood harvesters and strengthen Canadian seafood systems through information sharing.
