Healthcare innovation in Canada is an important priority of health systems. Innovation leads to adaptability of health services, a trait which allows them to maintain fidelity of care in the face of stress. The COVID-19 pandemic was a severe system stressor, which saw a diversity of responses across the Canadian health system. Understanding the strategies and tactics employed by rural communities to maintain care integrity during COVID-19 is important.
Through building partnerships with rural health research institutions nationally and internationally, holding workshops and focus groups with rural stakeholders, and establishing permanent integrated knowledge translation channels, local thinking can be mobilized to improve research capacity in rural places. This expanded research capacity will help reform health systems to be place-based, improving healthcare access in rural communities.
