Better supporting the social participation of 2SLGBTQIA+ (two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and those with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities) older adults with disabilities is essential to promoting their health and well-being. The combination of a minority gender identity or sexual orientation, disabilities and advanced age increases the risk of vulnerability. This research project aims to create tools that promote inclusive environments for the social participation of 2SLGBTQIA+ older adults with disabilities (physical or mental health disorders). These tools will be designed to better respond to their unmet needs in terms of social inclusion and interpersonal relationships, as well as access to leisure, sport, tourism, and cultural activities in their environment. Supported by action research, in partnership with GRIS Estrie, it will be exploring their social participation needs through various methods, such as interviews, photovoice and focus groups. The results will inform key components of an awareness-raising campaign for interested parties, gatekeepers and decision makers involved in key services for the social participation in old age This awareness-raising will contribute to make the spaces of participation more welcoming and accessible to 2SLGBTQIA+ older adults with some type of disability.
