This project focuses on advancing digital denture workflows at a modern denture clinic, with the goal of delivering faster, better-fitting dentures while reducing post-insertion adjustments and patient appointments. The clinic currently uses 3D scanning, CAD software, and digital fabrication to create complete, partial, and implant-supported dentures. The challenge is optimizing these processes to improve efficiency and accuracy without changing the existing scanning equipment.
The objectives are fourfold: first, to improve 3D scanning accuracy by refining patient scanning protocols and scanner settings; second, to increase CAD design efficiency through workflow optimization and template improvements; third, to enhance fabrication processes by ensuring scanned data translates accurately into physical dentures; and fourth, to improve overall patient outcomes and clinic efficiency by reducing adjustments and streamlining post-insertion follow-ups. The intern will achieve these goals through workflow evaluation, hands-on testing of scanning and design methods, trial denture fabrication, and detailed analysis of fit and efficiency outcomes.
Supervision will occur in person every Monday and Wednesday, with guidance on project tasks, progress reviews, and problem-solving. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the intern will work independently, applying learned skills and managing workflow autonomously. Working onsite allows the intern to collaborate directly with clinicians and dental technicians, access 3D scanners, CAD software, and fabrication equipment, and gain immersive experience in a patient-focused, collaborative clinical environment.
Deliverables include optimized digital denture workflows, prototype dentures, a detailed project report, and a presentation with recommendations for implementation. The project benefits Canada by improving accessibility to high-quality dental prosthetics, reducing clinical inefficiencies, and supporting industry growth in digital dentistry. For the intern, it provides practical experience in digital dentistry, problem-solving, project management, and collaboration, preparing them for future careers in dental technology, clinical research, or biomedical innovation.
