Craft Malthouse Automation

Dacotah Malt Ltd. is Manitoba’s first and only craft malthouse. While malting is an age-old practice, we are using the
latest and greatest seed and plant genetics and management practices on our small farm, in order to continue being
sustainable and leaving a smaller ecological footprint, on our farm and in our malthouse. We know technology in
many forms will help us do that efficiently. We are hoping to include some basic automation into our craft malting
business, which is just getting established. We are currently getting our equipment manufactured locally, and have
realized that it would be most cost-effective and labor-saving to include the automation at this stage than adding it at a
later date and time as we had originally envisioned. Specifically, we are looking to automate and install an energy
control system, that is custom and meets the needs of our business. Because we are the owners and operators of the
facility, some things, like turning on the heater would require one of us to drive to the malthouse from the farm and flip
the switch and drive back home. If we can automate the simple process then that saves us a huge amount of time,
energy, and money.
