The Optical Transport Business Unit of Lumentum Operations LLC is an Ottawa-based R&D operation with interest and experience in the design of Wavelength Selectable Switch (WSS) products for application in optical fiber communications networks. The performance and cost-effectiveness of WSS devices depends on epoxy technologies; epoxy is used to fix free-space optical components in highly precise and stable spatial arrangements and is used in the hermetic sealing of the enclosures that house the optics. Improvements to the engineering properties of epoxy technology can directly contribute to improved performance of WSS devices, delivering a critical competitive edge. Toronto Smart Materials and Structures (TSMART) specializes in advanced manufacturing with next-generation materials. In this project, Lumentum in collaboration with TSMART aims to develop the new generation of adhesive epoxies by incorporation of nanoparticles to enhance the mechanical and gas barrier properties using the state-of-the art manufacturing technologies and material characterization equipment.
