Developing long-COVID biomarkers in a Pan-Canadian cohort

Long COVID (LC) is a long-lasting condition that affects people after a COVID-19 infection. It includes symptoms that can last for months and affect different parts of the body. In Canada, about 19% of adults who had COVID-19 develop LC, with many experiencing symptoms for over six months or even longer. The exact cause of LC is still unclear, leading to challenges in diagnosing and treating it.
Research suggests that LC might be caused by factors like lingering virus, reactivation of other viruses, immune system problems, and changes in the body’s blood vessels. Our early study in young paramedics found signs that the immune system may play a big role in LC. We aim to develop tests to better diagnose LC by studying samples from a large group of Canadian COVID-19 patients.
