Development of laser beam welded aluminum drill pipe for drilling applications

For the joining of different materials, various processes are available in the industry such as riveting, shrink fitting or welding. Welding is the preferred joining method especially for high temperature and high-pressure applications such as pressure vessels and aircraft structures. In recent times, the number of potential applications and usage of welding is also increasing and at present around 3 million skilled persons are directly exposed to the harmful emissions of welding, globally. As compared to the conventional arc welding processes, the laser-based welding method are less likely to produce toxic fumes primarily because of the absence of the plasma arc and secondly because of the low heat input required to achieve the same penetration depth. Laser welding is specifically preferred in drilling technology as it enhances not only equipment health but also drilling tubes (Aluminium alloys in this case) integrity on land, at sea, and in the underground.
