Effects of Overspeed Sprinting in International Class Track and Field Athletes

Running speed is one of the most sought after abilities in sport with many coaches and athletes looking to improve it. This project aims to determine the effectiveness of overspeed training, a method used to make athletes run faster than they could on their own to improve speed. Little is known about how well this training works. This is because in the past the equipment needed to do this training was difficult to obtain and expensive. Today, the equipment is more accessible. This presents an opportunity to explore if this training works to improve speed. Through research and training interventions, the projects aims to assist Royal City Athletics Club in determining the value of this training. RCAC is one of Canada’s leading track and field clubs with athletes competing at the youth, development and international level. This research will help RCAC coaches deliver improved programming to their athletes at all levels. Between RCAC as a leader in Canadian track and field and the University of Guelph’s recognized research ability, the knowledge from this project can benefit sport science research across Canada in both track and field and other sports.
