Ekphrasis: Where Greek Poetry and Creative Writing Meet. Challenging the Interface Between Words and Images

This project investigates the intersection of classical literary description (ekphrasis in ancient Greek) and modern accessibility tools to improve how visual media is shared with the blind and low-vision community. By analyzing ancient techniques of “verbal picturing” alongside current international standards—such as the Accessible Canada Act and ABNT guidelines—the research aims to develop more evocative and effective audio description frameworks for more complex visual narratives like comic books. This collaboration benefits the participating institutions by fostering international knowledge exchange between Canadian and Brazilian ancient literature and creative writing experts, resulting in the expansion of our understanding of ancient descriptions and its applicability to creative writing. The outcomes of this project will also provide standardized inclusive design practices that can be applied across academic, cultural, and governmental sectors to ensure equitable access to information mostly available in its pictorial form.
