In Canada, primary care is mostly delivered by family physicians and nurse practitioners (NP) through family and walk-in clinics. These services provide first-contact access, ongoing management of common and chronic conditions, and referrals to specialists, while also emphasizing prevention. While the foundation of an effective health system, nearly 27% of BC residents do not have a family doctor or NP, adding stress to emergency rooms and clinics, resulting in poor work environments for our healthcare professionals and poorer health outcomes for our citizens.
Provincial reforms have prioritized Team-Based Care (TBC) as a strategy to improve access, strengthen continuity, and support provider well-being. However, there is limited evidence on how organizational design and leadership, which are central to effective teamwork, influence its success in practice. This study will examine four family medicine clinics in Kamloops, BC, to explore what helps or hinders collaboration, communication, and sustainability in TBC models.
