Exploring Recommendations and Best Practices for a National School Food Policy for Canada

With the 2021 commitment to develop a National School Food Policy, Canada joins other G7 countries and much of the industrialized world in prioritizing the health, education and development of children, by ensuring they have access to healthy food at school every day. This research will investigate existing school food programs (SFPs) across Canada and the globe to identify best practices and lessons learned. These findings will inform recommendations for the national policy, made by Food Secure Canada’s Coalition for Health School Food (CHSF), as they engage with governments and communities across Canada. This research and the creation of compelling story vignettes will allow the CHSF to share valuable findings with their 190 members across the country, as provinces, territories, community organizations, and schools work to build and enhance SFPs that meet the needs of their local communities and are based on evidence of best practices.
