Integrated Climate – Groundwater – Surface Water Assessment of Eastern Slopes Rivers

Eastern Slopes Rivers (ESRs) of Canadian Rockies are fed by various water sources including surface runoff, snow- and ice-melt, and groundwater. The contributions of the water sources vary seasonally and over the decadal scale under a changing climate. Different water sources flow through different pathways having different geological interactions, and consequently different water geochemistry. Therefore, the intern of this project will statistically analyze the riverine geochemistry and hydro-climatological data of the river watersheds to understand their seasonality, decadal variations, and their linkages. The project outcomes would shed light on the variations in the flow contributions of various water sources and improve flow prediction under a changing climate. As the knowledge translation is a strong component of this project, knowledge generated through this project will contribute to Alberta’s water monitoring, evaluation and reporting programs, and support water management and policy at municipal, provincial, and watershed council levels.
