InvDeveloping a precision inspection technique of transmission line infrastructure using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

UAV-based data analytics is an emerging technology with a high degree potential to replace or compensate traditional airborne-based mapping for infrastructure risk analysis. However, current development does still not reach to its maturity, allowing its immediate application to practical operations due to the complexity of flying dynamic and object understanding. This project aims to investigate potential of precision utility infrastructure inspection using UAV. Two internship researchers will develop new methods for improving utility scene classification and automatically tracking insulators. These research outcomes will allow the industrial partner (Industrial Skyworks) to explore a value-added new service of precision utility inspection using UAV. The expected benefit to the partner can be summarized as: (a) Efficiency – eliminating the cost and labor intensive UAV image processing, (b) Accuracy – improving the quality of detecting utility objects which allows timely identification of risk quantity, (c) Productivity- enhancing the updating process of a geospatial database in challenging environments.
