L2M-Smart Decontamination: continous PAH Monitoring and AI-Enhanced Safety for Firefighters

This project aims to develop a continuous monitoring system to detect cancer-causing chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that firefighters are exposed to during their work. These harmful substances stick to their gear, skin, and even enter fire stations and vehicles, increasing long-term health risks like cancer. The project will create smart sensors using advanced nanomaterials and artificial intelligence to track PAH contamination in air, water, and on surfaces. The expected benefit for the partner organization is a powerful tool that improves firefighter safety, supports better decontamination practices, and contributes to setting new health and safety standards across fire departments in Canada and beyond.
