Leveraging Computer Vision to improve the estimation of Postural Balance.

Improving postural balance is a part of many rehabilitation programs and plays an important role in clinical evaluation of residual motor ability. The assessment of center of pressure (COP) displacement is commonly done by laboratory-grade force plates that are expensive and require specific measurement set-up. The Nintendo Wii Balance Board (WBB) was proposed as an available, portable and low-cost device for balance assessment. WBB can be connected to a personal computer via a Bluetooth device with a customized software written on Python. The program will then calculate the COP using the center of the board as the origin and board dimensions from the forces at each transducer of the WBB. The intern will further use cameras connected to raspberry pi to collect and process data and create algorithms for object detection that will be used to fine tune machine learning models to calibrate the COP from the WBB.
