LiI’wat Nation Assessment of On-Reserve Agriculture

The Lil’wat Nation has been situated in its location since time immemorial at which it has also been
asserting its inherent right to govern within its traditional territory. The Nation’s current 5-year
Strategic Plan (2010 – 2015) calls for an objective to “Increase the production value of on-reserve
agriculture”. With this stated goal, the Nation recognized an opportunity to participate to a greater
extent in this industry as private, surrounding farmland is fully utilized for both livestock and crop
agriculture in the region. Therefore, it is the desire from Nation decision-makers to investigate how
production value may be substantially increased from the 1,000 acres of land suitable for agricultural
use. This research will provide these decision-makers and other stakeholders (Le. Land Management
Board, the Stockmen’s Association) with information to support infrastructure investments (I.e. flood
mitigation measures) and eventual revenue streams to support e’conomic development goals of the
Nation.
