Electricity produced from wind energy contributes to a cleaner environment and helps keep energy prices low. This project addresses two challenges encountered in wind turbine operations, namely leading-edge blade protection and mechanical failures. Both challenges present downtime for maintenance and repair, disrupting performance and power output, but more significantly, the sustainability of wind turbines. With a projected life expectancy of 20-25 years for current wind turbines, management of materials integrity during operation has the potential of extending lifetime and improving future wind turbine blade and component designs. Using additive manufacturing to facilitate small-scale testing in a lab-based environment, coupled with simulation of wind, rain, and marine-air conditions, the project will contribute directly to the management and optimization of wind turbine asset integrity and performance in harsh environments.
