The proposed project deals with a novel idea of combining lightweight design and synthesis of metallic nanostructured materials and their use as feedstcok in the development of high-strength thin layered coatings. The engineered design of particles holds the key to accommodate both strength and toughness in the derived coatings due to the very nature of ceramic nanograins’ high hardness and metal/alloy’s elasto-plastic behavior. In this work, specific metal design based on tantalum composition will
be implemented in the high-pressure cold spraying (HPCS). The objective is to develop and evaluate the thin layered coating (below 100 micron) that is light and, at the same time, resistant to erosion (abrasion+corrosion) in high-speed fluid flow environments. The coatings will be made functionally-graded through their thickness by employing the additive manufacturing principle with networked architecture.
