Physical Climate Risks to Alberta’s Energy Sector

The proposed research will meet the requirements of ENMAX Corporation for a comprehensive, consistent and detailed set of climate change scenarios and an assessment of potential risks and opportunities for the energy sector in Alberta and Calgary, in particular. The outcome will be an improved understanding of changes in the regional hydroclimate in support the planned adaptation of industrial practices to minimize and manage physical climate risk. The Mitacs interns will undertake research to 1) determine, in consultation with ENMAX staff, the relevant climate hazards, 2) derive projections of future climate changes using output from climate models, and 3) analyze the observed and modeled hydro-climate of western Canada in relation to the projected climate changes.
