Prototyping Quantum MRI Structures

The Mitacs Intern will join a team of summer students who will be working on the design of novel Magnetic Resonance Imagers (MRIs), that will include, in the coming summer, a novel new Quantum MRI design that the Intern will be focusing on. The Quantum MRI design uses a quantum material in sensitive magnetometers for detecting the MRI signals. The quantum material is diamond with nitrogen vacancies (NV). When integrated with a system of excitation green lasers, red florescence detectors and small microwave coils, an array of NV diamond detectors will allow the advancement of MRI technology toward MRIs that can produce high resolution images in seconds, instead of in minutes as they now do, because they will literally introduce a new dimension (detector location) into the creation of an MRI signal and the subsequent reconstructed image. The intern will be designing and building components for this magnetometer system and integrate it into a prototype MRI design. She and the rest of the student team will use 3D printing, sheet metal fabrication and electrical harness and printed circuit board assembly to construct a prototype of their MRI design by the end of the summer.
