This project aims to extract musculoskeletal health information from medical MRI scans that are already routinely collected in spine cancer patients at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Patients treated for spinal tumors typically undergo both CT and MRI scans as part of standard care. In this project, the intern will develop and validate an automated image-analysis workflow that can identify spine bones and muscles in MRI scans and compute quantitative measures such as bone structure, bone quality signals, and muscle size. These measurements will be compared with CT-based results to confirm their reliability. The expected benefit to the partner organization is a validated, reproducible workflow that enables opportunistic extraction of musculoskeletal biomarkers from existing scans, strengthening Sunnybrook’s spine and oncology research programs and supporting future development of quantitative imaging tools.
