Quantum Device Laboratory – ETH Zürich

This project focuses on how to ameliorate quantum computing by studying the effects of “two-level systems” on “superconducting qubits”. Quantum bits, or qubits, are the basic units of information in a quantum computer, much like bits in a regular computer. Two-level systems are essentially external pertubations that disturb qubits, ultimately making them behave like bits in a regular computer. Having bits instead of qubits means losing the advantage of quantum computing, hence the importance of studying how these pertubations affect qubits. As a Canadian student, I will collaborate with the Quantum Device Laboratory (QuDev Lab) at ETH Zürich’s Department of Physics to study these two-level systems via experiments and data analysis. The study of these system in Switzerland will ultimately contribute to ameliorating quantum computing, which will benifit directly the Canadian team’s research on quantum communication and cryptography, as these processes are currently physically limited by quantum computing performances.
