Robotic Arm Development for Total Automation of the Ignition Quality Tester (IQT™)

A novel diesel fuel Ignition Quality Tester (IQT™) was developed by Advanced Engine Technology Ltd. (AET) to provided fast, precise, and reliable measurements of Cetane number, which can be obtained by measuring the ignition delay from the start of diesel fuel injection to the point of combustion. The current testing system using IQT™ requires extensive user input to operate, and a demand has been identified for a totally automated system. The automated system will incorporate intelligent system technologies to minimize the amount of operator input required, which will reduce operating time and cost of using the equipment. In this project, a compact cost-effective robotic arm, a nitrogen supply connection system, and their control system will be designed for the automated fuel sample reservoir loading task. The success of the automated system will lead to an increase of the system’s productivity, which will provide a significant competitive advantage to the system.
