Roll-to-Roll Functional Material Deposition System

The manufacture of “smart devices” requires a large number of connected, low-cost embedded digital systems that are typically electronically connected on circuit boards. Our project develops a system to integrate functional materials directly into these boards which can provide or extend the capabilities of devices with functionalities such as memory, batteries or sensors. We develop a deposition system that directly structures these functional materials in a roll-to-roll system with improved characteristics as compared to requiring discrete extra components. The created circuit boards will be manufactured as thin films on a flexible substrate film by a process called sputter deposition. This can allow the resulting product to bend without damage to the electronic circuitry. Our results will help our partner organization in the development of a competitive commercial system for device electronics manufacturers and academia.
