Stuck en Route: Irregular Migrants and Protracted Transit Situations at the Periphery of Europe

My research concerns borders, refugees, and protracted transit situations at the periphery of Europe. Following four months of field work in the Western Balkans this summer, I propose to undertake a six-month foreign study period at Aix-Marseille Université under the supervision of Professor Pierre Sintès, an accomplished and renowned scholar, specializing in issues of international migration, bordering, and identities in the Balkans. As a member of his research laboratory, I would work among the select group of scholars conducting advanced research on my topic, gain invaluable guidance and training, and establish connections for international collaboration possibilities. I intend to conduct follow-up ethnographic research with former research subjects I met in the Western Balkans, that have since arrived in Marseille and elsewhere in France. The data gathered through this multi-spatial, multi-temporal examination of transit and mobility in and around Europe would generate unique and meaningful material for my ongoing Master’s research, academic articles, and future projects.
