The Aesthetics of Non-Art Objects: A Scoping Review & Empirical Study of Unconventional Aesthetic Stimuli
It is a common assumption that the study of beauty is closely related to the study of art. However, the two are not wholly synonymous; it has been widely acknowledged that aesthetic stimuli are not confined to a specific set of objects (such as music or paintings), but are instead defined by our individual attitudes and past experiences. This project aims to challenge the dominance of artworks as the default stimuli in aesthetics research, by conducting a scoping review and empirical experiment, to identify and characterize the aesthetic perceptions of non-art objects (e.g., clothing, furniture, architecture) that have thus far been investigated in an aesthetic context. This international collaboration between the University of Toronto, University of Vienna, and Helmut Schmidt University will make significant contributions in our understanding of beauty across various object categories, by mapping the breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary potential of modern aesthetics research.
