The History of the Kubrawiyya Sufi Order

My PhD dissertation is going to be focused on the Kubrawiyya Sufi order, a very influential spiritual community, which despite its massive importance has not received due attention from academics; the available modern scholarship on them has been predominantly concerned with the Kubrawis’ mystical doctrine, and the history of this order with all its crucial influences on the socio-political developments as well as religio-intellectual trends within the Persianate world has still remained significantly understudied. This is the gap that I have aimed to fill in my doctoral thesis through a reconstruction of the history of this Sufi order from the time of its formation in the 13th century up until the late pre-modern period. And for this purpose, I need more specialized training in the area of Kubrawi Sufism. That is the primary reason that I have planned to conduct three months of intensive research at the University of Glasgow under the tutelage of Professor Lloyd Ridgeon who is one of the leading authorities of classical Sufism with extensive experience of working on various aspects of the history as well as Sufi doctrine and practice of the Kubrawiyya.
