Unmanned Aerial Vehicles operating Beyond the Visual Line Of Sight in Urban Settings over 5G Networks: Market analysis and Applications

The goal of the broader Alliance submission is to develop a technology platform to test and benchmark best practices, policy recommendations, and regulations for the safe and reliable operation of automated UAVs during ground-based BVLOS (Beyond the visual line of sight) missions in urban areas, using 5G networks, a first in Canada. The Mitacs internships relate to the Alliance submission by focusing on how the technology (UAVs BVLOS over 5G Network in urban settings) studied in the Alliance submission translates into operational deliverables and business models within each of the four partners’ domains.
This project will involve six interns, 5 of them graduate or last year undergraduate students and 1 Postdoctoral fellow (PDF, who also leads the Alliance-based topics). Four interns will focus on how to translate the technologies developed and deployed in the Alliance submission into business opportunities for each of the partners’ businesses, and the other two will study in depth the last mile delivery hybrid system.
