Vessel-mounted lidar for navigational depthfinding, underwater bathymetry and environmental assessment: Data Collection and Analysis

Sonar, a widely used technology aboard vessels for tasks such as depth measurement and fish identification, has drawn significant environmental concerns, particularly regarding its impact on marine mammals like whales and dolphins due to its high-frequency sound emissions. In response, Envisioning Labs, an innovative company based in Vancouver, has developed a groundbreaking solution: a quieter bathymeter utilizing lidar technology. This innovative hybrid lidar-sonar device marks a significant advancement in environmental conservation by reducing disturbances to marine life. The primary objective of this pioneering project is to comprehensively assess the potential of the cutting-edge technology known as QUELL (Quiet Underwater Exploration Lidar) across various applications for characterizing the water column. These applications encompass fish detection, identification of floating debris, and underwater bathymetry, all accomplished through the detailed analysis of the complete waveform return of laser pulses captured by the QUELL system. By harnessing the precision and reduced environmental impact of lidar technology, the QUELL system aims to revolutionize underwater exploration while prioritizing the protection of marine ecosystems. Through rigorous testing and evaluation, Envisioning Labs aims to establish QUELL as the leading eco-friendly marine sensing solution, fostering sustainable practices and conservation efforts worldwide.
