Vision Based Tracking of Hands in Vehicles

Eye tracking has been a staple of partially automated vehicles for the last several years and forms a standard part of a driver monitoring package:

The next step is to understand if drivers are hovering over the steering wheel or pedals in preparation to take control. As part of the HumanDrive project: https://humandrive.co.uk/ we are collecting video for postprocessing of the hands and feet. With support from the School of Computing and Institute for Transport Studies the summer intern will leverage or develop a machine vision application to process the videos and track the hand position. A short report will be written that describes the approach and its reliability. This work would be some of the first of its kind and will prepare the intern for future machine vision research.
