Toward a better treatment to optimize biomechanical function in individuals with a foot amputation

This project aims to compare the biomechanics of the lower limbs in individuals with different types of foot amputation (i.e., transmetatarsal, metatarsophalangeal and toe) during locomotion (e.g., walking, stair ambulation). To achieve these objectives, individuals with and without a foot amputation will undertake a biomechanical evaluation (joint movements/forces and muscle activity) during the aforementioned tasks.

Novel TPV System Comprising Optical Cavities and Bifacial PV Cells

The objectives of the proposed research are to design, build and test a simple but robust prototype thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system comprising an optical cavity configuration and a bifacial PV cell. As a part of this collaboration, the design and fabrication of an optical cavity-based TPV system will be done at York University. This optical cavity […]

Proxemics-Aware Agents for Everyday Activities

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more ubiquitous with each passing day. Our goal in this project is to enhance human-AI interaction by exploring ways in which proxemics can help drive and support the interaction. We want to create more intuitive and user friendly agents that are aware of one’s context and proxemics in […]

Visualization in motion for wearable and mobile devices

the motion relationship between viewers and visualizations can affect readability and usability of data in various application contexts. Our previous research (10.1109/TVCG.2022.3184993) showed that motion factors such as moving speed and movement trajectory impact reading accuracy. Nevertheless, we still do not know how visualizations should be designed in real scenarios such as when both viewers […]

Nutrient productivity of reef fish on degraded coral reefs

This project will investigate the rates at which coral reef fish grow and produce nutrients vital to human health. Climate change has caused habitat degradation on many coral reefs around the world, which affects the fish species supported by reefs and in turn the fish available to local fisheries. The production rates of reef fish […]

Le but […]

The Perception of Pain in Others: Variations in Pain Expectations as Function of the Ethnic and Gender Profile

Efficient communication of pain increases chances of survival. Among communication channels, facial expression remains the most effective way for humans to communicate their pain. However, pain expressions are often significantly underestimated. This bias is even worse if the person in pain comes from ethnic minority groups or is a woman. Our interpretations would then be […]

Multi scale assessment of Ecosystem Resilience to Hydroclimatic disturbances

The connection between climate change and terrestrial ecosystems has long been a key challenge in global change research. Climate change and hydroclimatic disturbances will impact the structure and functioning of these ecosystems. Therefore, studying their responses to disturbances at different scales is crucial for contributing to ecosystem management, mitigation, and adaptation strategies. This study seeks […]

Livelihood Strategies and the Experience of Urban Development: the Case of Women Workers in Resettlement Colonies in Mumbai

A prominent feature of urban development in the present era is the forced eviction of communities living in informal settlements to make space for infrastructural projects. The research project looks at the livelihood strategies adopted by women in the Lallubhai Compound, a resettlement colony in Mumbai, to navigate the effects of their displacement due to […]
