Estimating Organic Matter, Soil Surface Roughness, Plant Stand Count, and Inter-plant Spacing from High-Resolution RGB Imagery

Precision agriculture is adopting site-specific agriculture practices reducing farm inputs and increasing productivity. Site-specific agriculture requires information about every inch of the field. Provided the large farm holding of the Canadian Prairies, getting extensive information about the field is an uphill task. Currently, limited samples are taken from the field resulting in low spatial resolution. Thanks to progress in economical image acquisition methods, acquiring high-resolution field imagery has become more accessible. The project aims to use high-resolution field imagery to reduce the burden of manual soil sampling and field scouting. This project studies relationships of different field attributes and investigates whether soil attributes like surface roughness and organic matter content can be predicted for RGB field imagery using machine learning and deep learning methods.
Similarly, plant stand count and inter-row plant spacing are estimated from RGB imagery. Additionally, the project studies seed mortality as a function of plant stand count, inter-plant spacing and soil attributes. Lastly, yield is estimated at the early growth stage of plants through non-destructive biomass estimation using high-resolution RGB ground imagery.

Evaluation of the Group Living Compatibility Assessment Tool (GCAT)

For the past two years, Kerry’s Place Autism Services has been developing a tool to measure compatibility between housemates on the autism spectrum in a group living setting. The Group Living Compatibility Assessment Tool (GCAT) is to be used as a guide to identify whether or not two persons are likely to cohabitate safely. This project will evaluate if the GCAT includes all the relevant areas of compatible incompatibility between future housemates and environments for autistic adults (e.g., person’s sensory preferences, medical and behavioural profile, general house requirements, and lifestyle and social interactions). We will also determine if the GCAT is considered appropriate based on feedback from professionals, self-advocates and their families. The information gained from the GCAT will then inform areas for intervention to improve compatibilities, such as the physical environment, skill development, daily activity schedules, and social interactions, and create more harmonious living situations and improved quality of life.

Re-imagining knowledge mobilization in a carbon-constrained world: A study of academic conferencing in the sustainability sciences

Academic conferences are important forums for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange knowledge and address real-world challenges. Especially for early career scholars and scientists in parts of the global South, attending conferences is a vital part of their career development. However, going to a conference often involves long-distance air travel, so the benefits of attending need to be weighed up against its environmental impact. This collaborative project between McGill University and Ouranos aims to develop low carbon- and travel-intensive alternatives for academic conferencing. The interns will help to develop and test the alternative at the upcoming Adaptation Futures conference, which is expected to host over 2,000 participants worldwide. This partnership contributes to Ouranos’ mission to help Quebec society better adapt to climate change based on rigorous scientific knowledge. Ouranos will also benefit from the University’s capacity to attract and bring in exceptional students from different parts of the world.

HiSarah: A Voice Assistant for Seniors

Many voice and chat systems have emerged with the advancement of deep learning and big data processing technology like
Alexa. However, there is still a large gap in implementing human-like conversation systems and there is a stigma around
acceptance of the technology. In this project, we reduce the gap by building a personalized a voice bot, HiSarah, for seniors
by extending existing voice bots to: a) give reminders about medication; b) answer personal health related questions from a
predefined list of questions, and c) launch contactless wellness monitoring application “Veyetals” for checking vital signs and
make phone calls. By allowing the caregivers to set up HiSarah for patients’ caregiving tasks, the voice bot can serve as a
great assistant for the seniors to perform regular caregiving tasks on their own and age comfortably in their home environment,
and thereby, leverage the senior care quality in Canada.

Developing and optimizing a novel multi-material binder-jetting additive manufacturing system

Located in Montréal, Canada, NG is a pioneer in the high-precision metal AM market and the premier Canadian metal 3D printer provider. To solidify their unique market position, it is key to increase their deposition process expertise and explore technologies for process performance improvement and added value proposition. The proposed project aims to support this mission by developing binder-jetting functionality in NG’s AM technology and characterize their multi-material (metallic and ceramique feedstock) and multi-scale (nanometer to micometer particles) deposition process. Since NG is based in Montréal, expanding and improving their patented AM technology capabilities will secure their leading market position in the customized metal product manufacturing field and could lead to the creation of new jobs and future recurrent sales on consumables thereby providing a benefit to Canada overall. In addition, this project will contribute to the formation of two HQP (graduate students), providing valuable industrial experience at the same time.

Effects of high irradiance on the in-vitro pulp temperature rise, mechanical properties of bulkfill resin composites, and light transmission through the post

Nobody likes to have dental work redone. It is uncomfortable and it costs money.
Composite resins have been widely used in restorative dentistry for many years and have good clinical longevity, but adequate photoactivation is a critical step in the restorative procedure. One of the main factors influencing correct photoactivation is the type of curing light used. This justifies the need to keep studying the performance of curing lights, especially concerning the simplest and most commonly sold curing lights on the market so that we can understand what is going on and deliver the best treatment and longest lasting for our patients.
This project aims to answer the question that is of great importance to dental patients and to dentists, namely, how to deliver a restoration that will last the longest. How can the dentist achieve the longest lasting restoration? Based on the results of this project, manufacturers of posts will have a better understanding of how to improve light transmission through their posts.
Ultimately the clinical procedures for the proper selection of fiberglass posts may change
We also aim to produce scientific articles and present our research at dental meetings to bring the results of this research to the dental world.

Documenting safety and efficacy for traditional Chinese herbs for use in dogs and cats: Draft preparation of a regulatory dossier

Traditional Chinese herbs (TCH) have been used for more than 3,000 years. They have gained increasing interest to improve performance in livestock, and have been documented to improve health and prevent, treat, and cure disease or ameliorate disease symptoms. However, limited knowledge is available regarding the modes of action as compared to modern medicine, and their impact on the health and well-being of companion animals. Pet food is highly regulated, and novel ingredients must acquire a definition by specific regulatory agencies in order to be legally used in pet foods. Thus, this proposal has two major goals: 1) To systematically review the use of TCH as supplements or feed additives for dogs, cats and other monogastric animals, and their subsequent effect(s) on metabolism and overall health; and 2) to prepare a regulatory dossier for selected TCH for intended use, ingredient review, comparative safety data in dogs and cats if sufficient literature is available. Julia Pezzali will manage all aspects of the proposed project work (e.g. systematically review the literature and prepare the regulatory dossier) under the guidance of the Principal Investigator and the industry collaborator. The company will highly benefit from having the expertise of the Principal Investigator, who will be supervising the intern, on the use of specific additives on pet foods and the regulatory pathway necessary for approval of TCH. This will potentially create new opportunities for future research, which will benefit the Principal Investigator, the University and the industry partner.
