Wild Tides: Media Infrastructure, Built Space, and Financialization in Post-Crisis Ireland

The research to be undertaken in Ireland is a part of my dissertation project, entitled “Wild Tides: Media Infrastructure, Built Space, and Financialization in Post-Crisis Ireland.” The project widely investigates the intersections of various industries—media, tech, tourism, and finance—which have been strategically deployed in Ireland’s post-financial crisis political and cultural landscape as areas for recovery, growth, and re-development, with a particular focus on space and planning due to the centrality of property finance within the global economic downturn. The title of the project refers to the dictum that “a rising tide lifts all boats,” a slogan favored by Seán Lemass, seen to be the pioneer of liberalization in the Irish economy during his tenure as Taoiseach in the 1960s. However, the industries promoted since the crisis, which tend to instrumentalize Irish “culture” towards goals of economic development, participate within an increasingly turbulent political, economic, and environmental climate. Intelligent Activity Tracking and Perception

Tracking humans in video can have a variety of applications including monitoring shoppers in stores, identifying suspicious activities in public spaces, and ensuring the security of senior home residents. Recent advances in video processing and hardware capability on computers have made it possible to track a single human in a video sequence in real time. However, tracking multiple people at the same time without mixing up the identities of different persons is still a major research challenge. Aidant Intelligent Systems Inc. has already implemented real time tracking algorithms internally. To extend their algorithms to reliably track multiple humans. While we will start by considering the input of a single video camera, we will subsequently introduce multiple high end video cameras and develop new algorithms that can improve the accuracy utilizing multiple videos.

Lived Scans: Integrating the Arts in Medical Education

My research project is motivated by the desire to understand how the sense of self is altered by biomedical imagining technologies, and what role the arts can play to remedy the schism between medical scans and the lived experiences of an ill patient. From my previous ethnographic research, I have come to believe that medical practitioners are mutually implicated in preservation of subjectivity for their patients. In order for doctors to view their patients as irreducible subjects instead of objects of study, empathy must be instilled, fostered, and preserved as a key component to patient. One proven strategy for empathy creation for students and professionals is the thoughtful integration of humanities into medical pedagogy. The UK has an established history of integrating the arts into medical education, a field known as the Medical Humanities. Through interviews with world-renowned Medical Humanists, conducting fine arts workshops for mixed classes of patients and physicians, and inserting myself into the critical discourse only found within esteemed Medical Humanities research clusters, I expect to decipher the strategies and best practices for integrating the arts into medicine. My ultimate goal is to create arts implementation procedures for the burgeoning Medical Humanities programs back in North America.

Enabling Decision Making for Lower Mainland Facilities Management through Seismic Risk Modelling of Hospital Infrastructure

Healthcare infrastructure plays a key role in the recovery of communities in a post-disaster scenario. In seismically active regions, such as western Canada, an understanding of the seismic performance of hospitals is essential to inform emergency management and effectively mitigate earthquake risk. This research project aims to develop new methodological approaches to integrate seismic risk assessments into the decision-making process of healthcare facilities management. A series of case studies aimed at evaluating the seismic risk of several hospital campuses in the Lower Mainland will be used to validate the methods. The project aims to utilize building inventory data developed through a visual screenings of seismic vulnerability to develop models to estimate seismic damage, economic losses and levels of functionality associated with different ground motion shaking intensities. Two hospital campuses will be evaluated under realistic scenario earthquakes to inform emergency management response and identify possible mitigation measures.

Towards understanding adoption of Carsharing

Carsharing is a service where members have access to a fleet of shared vehicles distributed across a city. Members can book a vehicle when needed, allowing for the convenience of vehicle ownership while reducing the need to own private vehicles. The two primary forms of carsharing are a free-floating or free floating model, where users can pick up and drop off vehicles anywhere inside a service area, and a round-trip or round trip model, where members pick up the vehicle at a specific location and later return it to that starting location. Arsenic release from arsenic-bearing minerals

When waste rocks generated by mining activities are exposed to the air and water, various toxic elements may be released to receiving waters and soils. Arsenic (As) is known as one of the most toxic pollutants which can cause damage to the environment and human health. To implement effective source control, it is essential to identify key factors that control the leaching process. The main objective of this research is to determine the rate-controlling steps in the release of toxic elements, with the initial focus on arsenic release. Leaching experiments will be performed to obtain the release stoichiometry. The effect of different parameters including temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen will be investigated to derive the kinetics.

Electrocatalyse d’hydrogène avec des catalyseurs moléculaires inorganiques

Dans une situation de crise environnementale, l’industrie doit prévenir le réchauffement climatique avec la transition des énergies fossiles vers les énergies renouvelables. L’hydrogène dont la combustion génère de l’eau présente le carburant le plus prometteur quant à la préservation de l’environnement et son rapport énergétique massique. Actuellement, la majeure production est issue du reformage du méthane : une méthode qui relargue du dioxyde de carbone. Le clivage de l’eau en O2 et H2 se projette la technique la plus propre et économique. L’électrolyse de l’eau dans l’industrie se produit grâce à des cathodes de platine ou encore du Nickel ou Molybdène. Diminuer le coût énergétique d’électrolyse en utilisant des métaux abondants donne naissance aux motivations du projet de recherche. Les systèmes de catalyse hétérogènes sont exploitables en longévité mais les rendements énergétiques ne sont pas optimaux. Le chauffage et des plus hautes pressions sont nécessaires. TO BE CONT’D

Zebrafish high throughput screens for development of drugs targeting sepsis, stroke and other chronic diseases

Currently there is a huge challenge in drug screens as the vast majority of the candidate drugs fail in clinical trials either due to no efficacy or drug toxicity. As an alternative to traditional animal models, zebrafish have recently emerged as a powerful vertebrate paradigm to study human disease and to use its developing embryos for drug screens. In contrast to traditional cell-based screening, the zebrafish provides a whole vertebrate system for drug screening. It combines the biological complexity with the ability for high throughput screening and quick assessment of potential toxicity. It is expected that the candidate drugs identified from the zebrafish screen will have a higher success rate than the cell-culture based screens. In this grant, we will employ zebrafish disease models of sepsis, stroke, diabetes, neurological and inflammatory diseases to screen for new chemical drugs, which will be validated in mouse models.

Visual Analytic Tool for Lessons Learned Retrieval and Decision Making

According to the World Petroleum Council (WPC), the average age of employees in Oil and Gas companies is 50 years, and it is estimated that in the next 5 years 40-60% of them will retire. One consequence of this age-related crisis is losing the accumulated knowledge by retiring “gray-beards”. In this scenario, new software technologies are mandatory to retain decades of expertise and transfer it to new employees. The objective of this project is to start paving the way for developing a novel software system that supports timely decision-making using lessons learned and best practices in the oil and gas industry. The proposed project is focused on reducing the overhead of the complicated process of retrieving all necessary pieces of information to solve a problem. This system integrates textual information from different sources, such as manuals and lessons learned, to retrieve most of the related documents using natural language processing technologies. Designing and Developing Interaction techniques for webspaces in AR/VR

The objective of this project is to design and develop interaction techniques for Webspaces in Virtual/Augmented Reality. We will study and understand current techniques to interact with the websites via screens, how users access the information and media presented on the websites and the ways in which this presentation of information can be improved to provide a better experience when using 3D interfaces. While using VR/AR headsets, various new challenges arise in the efficiency and usability of the tools which has a lot of scope of improvement. We expect to create more intuitive and viable interactive solutions for a 3D environment to access the content on websites, incorporating them on the current popular 3D web-content sharing webspaces and possibly a Research Article presenting the analysis and the techniques.
